In the wake of the recent MOVEIt data breach, the Office of Motor Vehicles (OMV) in Louisiana took a significant step on Friday to protect its residents by retaining Norton LifeLock to offer one year of complimentary credit monitoring and identity theft protection to all those impacted by the breach. The package includes LifeLock Standard™ identity theft protection.
Cybersecurity outfit Emsisoft reports that nearly 383 organizations and over 20 million individuals have been compromised in the MOVEit data breach, with notable victims including Bank99 in Austria, PwC Australia, Medibank, Fortescue in Australia, Region of Queens Municipality in Canada, Green Shield Canada (GSC), and IWK Health Centre in Halifax, NS, among others.
For those affected, activating the membership is simple and can be done online. Enrolment instructions are available at nextsteps.la.gov. Furthermore, OMV will send email notifications to individuals whose information was involved in the incident.
To assist individuals with queries related to the breach, OMV has set up a toll-free call center that operates 24/7. For any concerns or questions, affected individuals can call (866) 861-8717.
The MOVEIt data security incident, announced last month, exposed the personal information of Louisiana driver’s license holders, identification card holders, and vehicle registrants. Therefore, OMV strongly advises all impacted Louisianans to remain vigilant against potential fraud and identity theft.
OMV has also recommended to regularly review financial statements and credit reports for unauthorized activities. If any such activity is noticed, it should be reported immediately to the relevant financial institution or credit bureau.
With these proactive measures, Louisiana aims to provide support and protection to its residents during this challenging time of data breach risks.
As of 21 July 2023, the mass hack of the file transfer tool, MOVEit, stands out as the largest data breach, affecting over 200 organizations and up to 17.5 million individuals.
