The Suffolk Regional Off-Track Betting Corporation (Suffolk OTB) is ready to make a significant impact on Long Island’s entertainment sector with its ambitious expansion plan for Jake’s 58 Casino Hotel. The proposed $200 million project, set to be approved by the Islandia Village Board, aims to transform the popular casino into a premier gaming destination.
The expansion plan centers on doubling the number of video lottery terminals (VLTs) at Jake’s 58, from the current 1,000 gaming positions to an impressive 2,000. This substantial increase will be complemented by a 100,000-square-foot expansion that encompasses a VIP gaming lounge, several new restaurants and bars, and a multilevel parking lot.
Moreover, all 210 guestrooms at the on-site hotel will undergo a comprehensive upgrade.
Suffolk OTB took full control of Jake’s 58 in May 2021, securing ownership after buying out Delaware North, which initially financed the transformation of the former Marriott Islandia hotel into a VLT casino. Following this acquisition, Suffolk OTB has excelled, becoming one of the most successful VLT “racinos” in New York.
The Islandia Village Board’s recent preliminary approval of the project with a 4-0 vote paved the way for a final vote, which is expected to occur today evening at Village Hall. The board’s decision will be preceded by a public comment session, providing an opportunity for local stakeholders to voice their opinions on the expansion.
Suffolk OTB’s strategic step to expand Jake’s 58 aligns with New York state officials’ consideration of downstate applications for Las Vegas-style casinos. Notably, Las Vegas Sands, the world’s largest casino operator, is seeking to develop an integrated resort near the Nassau Coliseum, about 30 miles west of Jake’s location.
In response to noise complaints from nearby residents, Jake’s 58 representatives have proposed the construction of an 800-foot-long, 10-foot-high sound wall, demonstrating their commitment to addressing community concerns.
If the Village Board’s decision goes in favor of the expansion, Suffolk officials plan to break ground in early November. The project’s positive impact will extend beyond the casino’s offerings, as it is expected to generate significant revenue for New York schools and Suffolk County, while also creating both temporary construction jobs and permanent employment opportunities at the new facility.
