According to official data, the UK’s GDP unexpectedly shrank in August, falling by 0.3%.
According to the Office for National Statistics, the GDP expanded by 0.1% in July, well before the surprise decline.
Analysts had predicted that despite the increasing strain that consumers and businesses were under, economic growth would stagnate.
The UK will suffer a recession toward the end of the year, the Bank of England has warned.
